Steven Lee, is a community advocate, a father of two (son, age 22, and daughter, age 17), and has been a resident in the 44th district for over 12 years. For the last 10 years, Steven has served the community in numerous capacities. As Executive Director of Unity Network and Counseling Center for the last 10 years, he established relationships with neighborhood community leaders, US, State and City government officials for the purpose of developing resources and acting as an advocate for community concerns.
Over the years Steven’s entrepreneurial spirit and marketing ability have made him a small-business owner managing a non profit organization, a school for special needs children, a medical office, a merchant association and eventually his own political campaign. A mentor, youth counselor, community volunteer, a business owner, and dedicated father; Steven is passionate about serving his community. Today Steven serves as director of development and operations for a special needs school for children with development disabilities, and as Executive Director of a non profit community based organization.
Dr. Lee’s experience in community service includes serving as President of Board of Directors of People TV, Chairman of the Board of Unity Network and Counseling Center, President of the Martin Luther King Merchant Association, Member of the inaugural appointment class for the Fulton County Juvenile Court Community Restorative Justice Board, Director of the In the Zone After School Program, and the Director of the A Guiding Hand Mentoring Program for young men.
Over the past 10 years Steven has been on both sides of business within our community; both as a local entrepreneur and as a director in the non-profit arena. . In 2006, Steven was awarded the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition by the U.S. House of Representatives, in recognition for his work at Unity Network and Counseling Center to positively improve the life conditions of disadvantaged youth in our community.
Among the organizations that Steven has been involved with include, Martin Luther King Merchant Association, President; Youth Fest, Inc, Board of Directors, Member; School Council Member, L.O. Kimberly Elementary School; People TV, Board of Directors, Past President; Dept of Juvenile Justice - District 3B Advisory Board; Unity Network and Counseling Center - Board of Directors, Founder and Chairman; American Council on Education - Disability Accommodations Consultant; Dept of Juvenile Justice - DeKalb County Screening Committee National Association for Adults with Special Learning Needs – Member; Alcorn State University Metro Atlanta Alumni Chapter, Member; Granny’s House, Board of Directors; and President’s Volunteer Service Award – Certifying Agent.
Steven has been recognized numerous times for his dedication and service to the community. Among these awards include: Outstanding Georgia Citizen, Secretary of State, GA; Proclamation, Atlanta City Council; Certificate of Recognition –UNCC, State of Georgia; Commendation Award – UNCC, State of Georgia; Youth Enrichment Award – Martin Luther King Merchant Association; International Who’s Who of Professionals; Dedicated Service Award, District 10; Community Service Award, Youth Fest; Community Support Award, Bankhead Courts Community; and Outstanding Dedication and Service Award, YPC Centennial Place.
Throughout his professional career, Steven has committed himself to improving the life conditions of those persons who are caught in a cycle of poverty, dependency, and persistent social and economic disability. He is committed to the development and self-actualization of individuals in need through grass-root efforts at the community level, and believes that every American deserves a better quality of life.
Steven’s personal experiences have shaped many of his community service over the years. In 2006 he became the operating director of an all male mentoring program for at risk male you ages 12 – 18. Knowing that it would take hard work, commitment, and sacrifice, he began to support them by involving himself in the community in which they lived. His philosophy is that if you want to make the world a better place for our children, start right where you are in your own neighborhood. He has fought and continues to fight for quality education for all children and their parents regardless of income or social status. He has taken time to participate on community task forces to fight against drugs and crime in our hardest hit neighborhoods. He has mentored community children for years helping them to see beyond their immediate situations and into what their potential was.
From the extremely poor to the extremely affluent, students to teachers, and businesses and consumers, Steven Lee has fought for all members of the community in order to provide a better Georgia for all. As a state representative he will continue his fight for quality education, free health care for all, and fair justice for all citizens.
